Dr. No #55 – If you don’t manage yourself, you’ll end up managed by Outlook

Hey lawyer,

Peter Drucker was the godfather of management. But his advice wasn’t for “teams” or “companies.” It was for you.

His point? Before you try to lead anyone else, figure out how to lead yourself. Otherwise, you’ll be nothing more than a glorified inbox.

1. Food for Thought

Are you designing your day… or just reacting to everyone else’s?

2. Big Ideas for GCs (Drucker-style)

  • Strengths are unfair advantages. Stop wasting time fixing weaknesses that bore you. Double down on where you’re rare and valuable.

  • Your work rhythm matters. Some people peak at 6am. Others at 10pm. Align your most strategic work to your best hours. Otherwise, you’re running a Ferrari in first gear.

  • Pick your playing field. Are you acting as Legal’s admin clerk… or as the company’s risk strategist? The answer decides your reputation.

  • Contribution is the question. Every morning ask: “What can only I contribute here?” If the answer is “chasing signatures”… rethink.

3. Mental Model – Inversion

Instead of asking, “How do I succeed as GC?” Ask, “How could I fail spectacularly?” Then don’t do those things. Brutal, but effective.

4. AI Booster – WorkPPT

Unlimited decks and websites in seconds. If your CEO wants a strategy slide by lunch, WorkPPT makes you look like Bain with half the budget.

5. Quote to Reflect

“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” – Winston Churchill
