The Legal Bullshit Rules
In The Code of the Extraordinary Mind, Vishen Lakhiani uses a strange little word:
“Brules.”
It means “bullshit rules”.
Not laws.
Not principles.
Just rules we inherited, repeated and eventually confused with truth.
Every profession has them.
Legal has a small museum.
“Legal must review everything.”
“More headcount means more capacity.”
“If it is not done internally, it is not controlled.”
“A good GC must have an answer to every question.”
“External expertise is only for exceptional situations, preferably after three committees and one mild panic attack.”
Some of these rules were useful once.
Some still are.
And some are just old fear wearing a nice suit.
This is where the idea of being “unf*ckwithable” becomes interesting.
Lakhiani defines it as being so at peace with yourself that outside noise does not disturb you.
For a General Counsel, that does not mean being cold, arrogant or impossible to challenge.
It means having enough inner clarity to question the rules everyone else obeys automatically.
Most legal teams try to become more strategic by adding more people, more process and more meetings.
The best legal leaders ask a better question:
What should Legal own, and what should Legal simply access?
That is the shift from reactive GC to strategic CLO, and perhaps one day to CEO.
Because influence is not built by controlling everything.
It is built by knowing what matters, where judgment is needed, and when to bring in the right expertise without growing the machine.
Legal is not a cost center.
Legal is strategic capacity, if you stop managing it like a museum of old rules.
